Community College Enrollment Process

Enrolling in community college is easier than you think. Enrolling will be the first of many steps you will take toward changing the rest of your life. However, before you continue reading this article, make sure you have read the Steps to take in High School prior to Community College Enrollment.

As mentioned before in the previous article, make sure you have already spoken to your high school counselor and filled out your K-12 form and Concurrent Enrollment forms, remember those forms must be filled out each semester.

Without further ado, here are the steps needed to complete community college enrollment as a high school student.

Find local community colleges and/or community college districts

Keep in mind that some community colleges have better transfer agreements with other universities

  • e.g. Los Angeles Pierce College, a community college within the Los Angeles Community College District, and California State University Northridge (CSUN), a 4-year university have a great transfer rate due to the close proximity between campuses. Los Angeles Pierce College is a “feeder” school to CSUN.

Make sure you are also able to drive to the community college in a short period of time. Oftentimes, choosing the closest community college may be the best choice for you since you may have to come to campus a few times.

You will have to drop off forms, K-12, to the school. If there are issues with the forms you may have to drive to the campus again. Far drives may not be ideal in these situations or ideal for when you may have in-person classes.

Application Process

To apply to any CC, search their website and click the apply button and fill out the information. In most cases, the application will ask you to include your social security number for identification purposes.

  • Applying at home may be the best option for students who do not have their social security information on hand

Once the application has been completed, wait for an email containing your ID number and personal school email

  • In my experience, it takes the school about one week to email your student information

Talk to a College Counselor

Once the application process has been completed and you have received your student information, complete your SEP, Placement Tests, and Orientation (online).

  • These tasks will be completed with a College Counselor

    • community college counselors are not assigned to students like many high schools assign students based on their last name

I highly encourage you to schedule a consultation with me as I offer a tailored College Academic plans specific to your needs. Oftentimes, college counselors are unfamiliar with concurrent student needs & do not give you a list of exactly what classes you need to take. Counselors will only tell you what areas of the IGETC you need to complete to graduate. Working with both me and a college counselor will be highly beneficial for your academic plan and your wellbeing.

Read IGETC and make initial plans for classes

Read through the list of classes you would like to take that fall into the IGETC

  • Some classes on the general catalog may not be transferable, be on the IGETC, or available that semester

    • This process is fun and is repeated a couple of months before each semester

Comment your questions about the forms and don't forget the follow me at @davidjamesgraye on all social media platforms to never miss a secret!
